About The Team

Nicholas Silva

Major: Mechanical Engineering
Year: Sophomore School: UMass Lowell
Hometown: Burlington, MA

In high school I was part of the music department for four years. I learned my love for physics and science when my teacher started telling us about the experiments he did in his spare time. Until then, I didn't even realize that I could build or design things. It was outside of my world at the time. He helped me to see that the barrier to entry for engineering wasn't astronomically high.

I feel like I will be a good contribution towards the team because if I have questions I will ask them, I help people that don't understand the material, and the biggest thing is that I am willing to step outside the box to figure out the answer. I also not afraid to take charge when needed to to make sure all work is done in a timely matter and to get the best results.

In high schools, I was a student in my schools electronics/robotics program. I also served as a member F.I.R.S.T. Robotics team for four years, and served as the teams captain during my senior year. This has given me experience with mechanical and electronic systems, as well as some practice writing code.

During my time at Umass Lowell I have studied physicals systems and have a good deal of practice with Solidworks. I am confident I can make a great contribution to this project.

I've had a passion for anything mechanical for as long as I can remember. Often I would get scolded as a kid for taking things apart and almost putting them back together. In middle school I joined the robotics team; I've been playing around in programming since then. In high school I took a robotics class, and in my senior year I took an independent study elective where I taught myself basic logic.

I love programming, and though I would still consider myself a novice there are few things more satisfying to me than seeing a flawlessly executed program after many long hours of debugging. Thus I feel I would be able to contribute to the project by implementing the code and making sure it works well with the hardware and design of the robot.
